Problems with Spelling?

Spell Checkers

Hand Held Spell Checks

Spell Checker

Hand held or computer spell checks are a must for the dyslexic people they give the person confidence and help to boost self esteem.

Computer Spell Checks

Nearly all word processing programs have spell checks, programs that also have a text reader are the best.

Text Readers

If the answer to these questions is yes you might benefit from using a text reading program.

The text reader in these programs will read out loud what you have typed so that you can hear when you have missed out a word, used the wrong tense or misspelt a word. It will help you proof read your work and significantly reduce errors.

The talking spell check in these programs enables the user to select the correct word from a drop down menu because they can listen to the words being read out loud.

You can also use the talking dictionary in these programs to see if you have used the word in the correct context.

You can use a word prediction tool when you are unsure of a spelling and only know the first few letters of a word. As you type the most likely words will appear in the prediction window, from this list you can then make a visual or auditory selection.

If you have difficultly with homophones such as tail (the tail of an animal) and tale (a story) these programs will find all the homophones so you can check the meaning.

Proof Reading

You must be aware, however, that if you spell checked a piece of work you will not remember how to spell the words you have corrected either visually or orally. You need to make a note of words that you often spell incorrectly and use a strategy to learn these words.

There are programs such as Ginger Software that will record the spelling corrections you make. Ginger software corrects your spelling sentence by sentence and also corrects the grammar.

Global Auto Correct sits behind any application you are using and simply corrects your spelling as you type. There are no wavy red lines to put you off your flow. It will record all the words you have spelt incorrectly and you can look at these at some other time.
