Penny Modena Assessor

Hi,
My name is Penny Modena.  You may have read my details and how I came to work with children with specific learning difficulties on the tutors’ pages.  As well as tutoring I assess primary age children for dyslexia.
If a child is younger than seven I feel it is probably better to wait before embarking on assessment as some of the child’s difficulties may be due to late development and might be resolved within time.  For an older child assessment is often beneficial for their self esteem as it helps to explain why they are not on a level with their peers in literacy, times tables etc, even though they may be just as able verbally.  It may also enable parents to obtain the specific help that their child needs.
My assessments can take up to six hours. A report, which includes advice on how best to teach the specific child, is prepared approximately three weeks later.  As my assessments take the best part of the day, parents normally collect their child at the end of the day.  Most children enjoy the assessment day as it is not school.
Occasionally it may be provident to arrange for assessment at an earlier age; for example, when moving to another country or indeed even to another school, so that the new school is fully aware of the exact nature of the child’s difficulties from the beginning of the child’s school career with them.
Opting for formal assessment during the beginning of year 5 may achieve extra time or other allowances for NCTs (SATs) or even the 11+  if the child were of the standard and they wanted to take the exam.
If the diagnosis is one of dyslexia, the child will require specialist teaching with a specifically trained tutor who will be able to teach the child according to his or hers specific needs.
Assessment is not excessively difficult; although it is tiring it only takes one day of your life.  Lessons are tailored towards the individual’s needs, are usually of one hour duration and can be continued for as long as you feel that a benefit is being received from them.
