6. What if an employee only has a ‘probability’ of dyslexia?
Many employers are willing to take steps to help employees even if the impact of dyslexia is not severe. It is all about getting the task and environment right.
Dyslexia is a wide term. If an employee has been screened and informed that they have a ‘probability’ of dyslexia, or assessed as having ‘mild’ dyslexia, they may consider that this will not impact upon them at work. How much it does will depend on the job description and related targets. An action plan to proactively deal with dyslexic related issues may still be helpful.
Public employers such as local authorities, hospitals, universities and schools are now required to publish an action plan to show how they will strive to address disability, including dyslexia, to create equal opportunities among staff.
An ‘Assessor In The Workplace’ could be found via the BDA website list. An Assessor has specialist training to explore an employees difficulties and the impact of their dyslexia on their working practice. A trained Assessor will provide an explanation of how to identify and intervene with dyslexia related problems. An ’Assessor In The Workplace’ could help create a happier outcome for both an employer and an employee and produce an effective action plan via a work skills assessment.
