Computer Books

There are several companies that produce computer books.

Black BeautyDon Johnson has produced a range of computer books called Start to Finish that have matched text and CDs so that the student can access the story in three different ways. These include abridged classics novels and some Shakespearean plays.

Sherston sells a range of books for Key Stage 1
The Naughty Stories and Oxford Reading Tree

The Wolf Hill series for the older pupil (6-11 years) has two levels each with six stories.

Crick software has a series called Planet Wobble.

Topologika has titles for the older student such as Stig of the Dump and Zorin the Curse of Sellardore.

Rapid is an exciting new reading scheme of finely-levelled, high interest, low ability fiction and non-fiction that can recognise and correct a student's reading errors as they read using speech recognition software. It gives the student support when they are working independently and gives the teacher a record of the student's errors, so that help can be correctly targeted.

Gutenberg Project A dyslexic student can download books from the Gutenberg Project. These electronic books are not computer books or audio books but they can be read outloud if you use a text reader. This will not of course be like listening to a computer book, but at least the student can access the text.

Seeing Ear Charity

The Seeing Ear On Line Library provides books in electronic text format for download by registered members of the Library. These books in electronic text format are not computer books or audio books but they can be read outloud if you use a text reader.

You can apply to be a member if you are visually impaired or dyslexic and you live in the UK or the EU.

If you find some interesting computer books that you think we should include in this section please let us know.
