Spell Checkers
Hand held or computer spell checks are a must for the dyslexic pupil they give the student confidence and help to boost self esteem.
Nearly all word processing programs have spell checks, programs that also have a text reader are the best for the dyslexic pupil.
These programs will read out the suggested words so that the student can make the correct choice. Some also have homophone checks.
Teachers must be aware, however, that if a dyslexic student has spell checked his piece of work they will not remember how to spell the words they have corrected either visually or orally.
Students need to make a note of words that they often spell incorrectly and use a strategy to learn these words. There are programs such as Ginger Software that will record the spelling corrections a student makes so that these words can be targeted by the teacher.
